Given Albania’s proximity to Italy, that scheme makes logistical sense, but who would be our Albania?

She did, but it didn’t reduce the numbers of people coming here – it just contributed to the Windrush scandal.
We don’t fund the training of enough doctors and nurses, so people come and fill the gaps. We don’t fund social care anywhere near enough, so a disproportionately migrant workforce makes up the numbers. And since public funding was slashed from universities, they are substantially dependent on attracting – you guessed it – migrant students who pay higher fees and subsidise domestic students.
And we are a large part of the problem: we’ve launched wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya in recent decades – none of which have led to those countries becoming any safer . We’ve armed some of the world’s most brutal dictatorships. Our foreign policy and arms trade swells the numbers of displaced people. Smash the gangs by all means, but smash our unethical foreign policy too.
