The covers are off. For near-on a year, historic Darwen Tower was hidden by scaffolding and an ugly grey plastic cover as a huge restoration project costing £300,000 took place.
The public can finally get up close again and see the impressive improvements, while also climbing the spiral stone staircase to steal a panoramic view from one of the two outdoor viewing platforms. The Grade-II listed monument, which is also known as Jubilee Tower, sits at the top of Darwen Hill around 372 metres above sea level and offers unrivalled views of East Lancashire as far as Morecambe Bay, North Yorkshire, Cumbria and North Wales and Derbyshire on a clear day.
The restoration required intricate and detailed work by specialist contractors to improve the internal stonework, structure, staircase and the glass dome at the top. Improvements also include the installation of a thick oak door, which has primarily been fitted in a bid to deter vandalism and improve security.
