A trip to Rawtenstall has, presumably, never been so festive

Whether it’s the warming smell of burning coal, or the opportunity to take in the sights from the comfort of a cosy carriage, there’s something that just feels so undeniably festive about a steam train.

There’s the Snow Queen ready to pose for selfies, some very happy animatronic reindeers, and a quartet of polar bears who are supposed to be either carolling or shivering from the cold . With staff decked out in Christmas costumes, including a fair few elves, we’re given a song sheet and head off on our way. Not long after departure, the children are given activity sheets, and told that, if we’re lucky, the big man himself might even be on board. For my seven-year-old niece, this sparked an immense expression of excitement and, for my 15-year-old nephew, a teeny bit of awkward apprehension - but you could tell he was secretly enjoying it.

Shaking with excitement, my niece was left speechless when he handed her a present. I won’t spoil what it was, but they were each given a present according to the age group on their badge - meaning it was considered to be appropriate and suitable for them, which I thought was a really nice, personal touch. Let’s just say both were incredibly happy with their gifts.

By then, we had realised we had practically ended up back where we began and the whole thing had flown by. As we got hopped off at the station, there were an assortment of new characters for us to say hi to, including fairies and drummers. By that point, we were ready for a nice warm cup of hot chocolate - which just so fittingly was served up at the station’s café.
