David Littleproud has reflected on the National Party's performance at the New South Wales state election, saying the result was indicative of the party being able to 'just talk common sense'.

Federal leader of the Nationals David Littleproud has declared the party's New South Wales state election result was a reflection of it sticking to"our values and principles" but acknowledged there were lessons that needed to be learnt from the outcome.

Nichole Overall, who won the seat at a 2022 by-election following the resignation of former state Nationals leader John Barilaro, was defeated by Labor's Steve Whan who had previously represented Monaro between 2003 and 2011. Mr Littleproud told Sky News Australia AM Agenda host Laura Jayes on Monday morning the Nationals was able to keep almost all its seats despite the removal of the Perrottet government because they"just talk common sense".

"And we had a record of delivery, so while the tide went out, it went out very heavily and we've got to be honest about that and we've got to learn the lessons. There's still lessons for the Nationals to learn in this as well." "I think Dom Perrottet eloquently said this on the night... this was a respectful campaign, one on issues and one on ideas. And this is where I think that Labor was able to cut through for a fresh start."
