Zara Aleena, a 35-year-old law graduate, was only minutes from her front door when she was attacked and killed in east London . She loved giving gifts, collecting them for friends and family whenever the opportunity arose. Her name meant “radiance”, like a blooming flower. Her grandmother is still distributing the gifts that Zara had purchased for loved ones, gifts she left behind.
He stalked another to a chicken shop, where he stood watching her with his hand down his trousers; he groped another on the street before she escaped him; he lay in wait for a fourth on her own residential road, but she was lucky enough to reach her house before she would have reached the alcove where he was hiding. None of these women, to the best of our knowledge, knew him. They only had one thing in common. They were all women.
It has been convenient, for some, to dismiss Zara’s death as the work of a psychopath. The object of this rhetorical move is to dismiss any relationship between her death and the broader prevalence of misogyny in our societies. It is easier to isolate a single killing as an extreme event, easier not to look. Zara’s murder happened on the street, and streets are dark places.
