The former prime minister’s planned attendance at the Tories’ conference is causing alarm, writes Katy Balls

in Birmingham. Michael Gove used a television appearance on the Sunday to declare war over her mini-Budget – when she was sat just metres away.

A source close to Sunak explained to the press that he wanted to “give Truss all the space she needs to own the moment”. The comments were read as somewhat passive aggressive given Truss didn’t have much to “own” at that moment in time. Her presence is already causing alarm in Government. “I need her there like I need a hole in the head,” says one Sunak-sympathetic MP.
