While all Uruguay's players and fans seem to be connected, either by blood or by rugby, they are set on beating Italy and claiming third place in their tough group
maybe five per cent of the country will watch the matches at the World Cup, although victory over Italy may change that. More than 100,000 Uruguayans have dual Italian nationality and around 40 per cent of the country have some Italian ancestry due to significant migration in the early 20th century.
That might be different in Carrasco though, an elegant district of Montevideo where many of the team spent their formative years. A number of independent schools are based there, including international ones such as Saint Patrick’s College and the British Schools of Montevideo. The latter produced Vilaseca and two more members of the starting line-up from Uruguay’s opener.
“It happened the same in Japan against Fiji. They told us ‘We are going to beat Fiji’ and everyone told us ‘No you won’t, you are not going to win, it’s impossible, they’re too big’. And they did.”
