Last week is judged by many in Downing Street to be Sunak’s best to date: the week he turned things around. Granted, that’s a low bar 🖋️ katyballs for ipaperviews

While it’s still a long way off until the next election, polling matters – in part because it has a large impact on the mood in Westminster. Success tends to breed confidence. While both Sunak’s team and Starmer’s accept that the poll lead is soft, it’s still the case that, were the Labour lead to reduce to 10 points, it would spook many Labour MPs. “At that point it is competitive, and people will ask how the Labour leader squandered such an advantage,” argues one Tory MP.

The boats pledge remains the trickiest – but there is a realistic hope to have the first flight depart the UK to Rwanda by the end of the year. “It would be symbolic,” says one government aide. Even though one flight alone is not going to be anywhere near enough to act as a deterrent to those considering coming over on small boats, the hope is that it would change the mood music. Rather than attack the morality of the scheme, Labour has attacked the workability.
