Maureen’s Caribbean Food, tucked away on Roundhay Road, has been operating for more than 20 years

There’s a hidden gem takeaway in Harehills which has been making authentic Caribbean food for more than 20 years.

Their signature dishes range from curried goat, ox tail, cow foot, lamb chops, various stews, ackee and saltfish, a mix of fried and jerk chicken, all with the option of rice and peas and Caribbean dumplings. I’d learned from prior experience that you’ve got to get there early to get your hands on the curried goat before it sells out, easily their most popular dish.

This whole order came to only £13, it’s such an affordable takeaway. To put that price into perspective, you’re lucky to be spending less than £15 on wrap and chips these days in many takeaways across Leeds. If you’re getting an Indian or Chinese takeaway, you’d be lucky to be spending below £20. The curried goat was sublime. The meat was really delicate with a strong gamey flavour, complemented by the light spice of the curry. I was pleased to see that it was served with brown rice, making the meal feel more guilt-free and healthier. There weren’t any peas in the rice but I was happy with the kidney beans. The steamed veg was also cooked to a really delicate standard.
