The opposition leader has accused the prime minister of “parading around” on the White House red carpet while failing to send a clear message on the Gaza conflict.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has accused Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of parading on the White House red carpet while his government failed to send a clear message to the world over its stance on the Gaza conflict, after Australia abstained from a United Nations vote over a humanitarian truce.
The prime minister’s comments followed increased criticism from the opposition over the government’s approach to foreign policy, prompting one Labor minister on Sunday morning to accuse Dutton of trying to use the conflict in the Middle East for his political advantage. “The prime minister had an opportunity here in the United Nations to send a clear message about our values and where we stand. And he failed that test. And I think it was an incredibly weak display of leadership from the prime minister,” Dutton said.Greens leader Adam Bandt also criticised Australia’s abstention. “Labor’s failure to vote with most of the world for a ceasefire is unacceptable,” he said. “Labor needs to work towards peace, not war, in Gaza and the Middle East.
Burke said there was nowhere in Australia where the colours of Palestinians had been acknowledged as worthy of grief until Canterbury-Bankstown Council in his electorate chose to fly the Palestinian flag – a decision he supported.Dutton accused Burke of pandering to his electorate, which has a significant Islamic population, instead of acting in the national interest.
