The National Weather Service says swimmers should avoid Lake Erie on Sunday, citing a high risk of rip currents.CLEVELAND, Ohio – The National Weather Service says swimmers should avoid Lake Erie on Sunday because of a high risk of rip currents. The agency said high winds and wave action will cause currents on the lakeshore that can carry swimmers through a sand bar and into the lake.
“Remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions,” the weather service said in its warning. It said the counties affected are Cuyahoga, Lake and Ashtabula in Ohio, while northern Erie County in Pennsylvania also will be impacted. “Rip currents are powerful, channeled currents of water flowing away from shore,” the weather service said on its website. “They typically extend from the shoreline, through the surf zone, and past the line of breaking waves. Rip currents can occur at any beach with breaking waves, including Great Lakes beaches.”
