Majorca's Palma Airport was even forced to temporarily close due to flooding as storms battered the island
Large parts of Spain including holiday hotspots Barcelona and Majorca are set to be battered by storms and heavy rain this week. Yellow weather warnings have been issued by AEMET, the country’s meteorological agency.
Heavy rain is forecast for the south-west coast of Majorca, with a warning in place from 2pm to 8pm on Wednesday, June 12. It comes after the island’s airport was forced to close on Tuesday due to flooding. Flights were grounded at Palma Airport due to “extensive flood” causing “chaos” as rain poured in through the roof, Majorca Daily Bulletin reports. The airport later reopened, with passengers told to check with their airlines before travel.More extreme weather is expected to hit Spain on Wednesday. Yellow weather warnings are in place along the country’s east coast, covering Valencia, Alicante and Almeria.
Further amber weather warnings for storms in place for the southern and northern interior regions of Valencia. These are in place until midnight on June 12. The warnings stretch inland, covering the Cuenca mountains and La Mancha. Warnings are also in place in the north east of the country, in Barcelona, Girona and the Lleida Pyrenees. There are currently no weather warnings in place for Thursday, June 13, or for Friday, June 14.
