Some videos have been shot on university campuses and attracted two million views.
A study help website linked to hundreds of contract cheating allegations is targeting Australian students through sponsored social media posts, including some filmed by influencers on university campuses.
But Chegg, a US technology company that offers subscription packages from $15 a month, says it is a legitimate study help website and that the “vast majority” of its subscribers use it to learn. The videos promote Chegg as a study help website, but don’t warn students they could be penalised for cheating for using some of the functions.
Deakin University assessment expert Professor Phillip Dawson said Chegg was working hard to position itself as a legitimate study help website. In its latest academic misconduct report, Sydney University said it had developed a bot to detect university assessment questions with requests posted on Chegg.com in response to increased reports of cheating using the website.
University of Wollongong is among the institutions which block the website on its server and have advised students not to sign up for the service.
