Keeping the pounds off can be tougher in later years, but ditching certain foods may help.
Ditching potatoes and bread for spinach and carrots may help keep the pounds off in middle age, new research claims.
Findings show the associations were stronger in women and those with excess body fat. Experts say their research highlights the "potential importance of carbohydrate sources for long term weight management". Data was collected from the Nurses’ Health Study , Nurses’ Health Study II , and Health Professionals Follow-Up Study . Scientists examined data at four year intervals over a total follow-up period of 24 years.
The results show that, on average, participants that consumed a 100g increase in starch daily gained 1.5kg every four years, with sugar adding 0.9kg. This total amounted to 8.8kg on average over 24 years.
