Herald Sun Senior Writer Patrick Carlyon says we are “living in weird times” as recent data revealed more Australians are receiving Centrelink payments than before the COVID-19 pandemic, despite record job vacancies in the country.
“I mean we’ve got record levels of employment and it seems we’ve got record levels of voluntary unemployment at this moment,” Mr Carlyon told Sky News Australia host Peta Credlin.
“I think there are so many jobs out there and I think that a lot of people feel that even though JobSeeker is not necessarily generous – why should they go off and do jobs that they don’t want to do, whether it’s fruit picking or other low paying jobs. “I think there’s this attitude that has sort of developed perhaps in part because of the pandemic and all the rest, where people feel like they can pick and choose what jobs they need to do – which goes against the old Australian ethos.
