The project was supposed to be finished last year, but is yet to start, as politicians and locals join forces against a development they say will disturb the natural environment and threaten endangered species.
Well-connected eastern suburbs residents are making a last-ditch attempt to stop the construction of a sewage pumping system at Parsley Bay which they claim will disturb the natural environment and threaten endangered species.
The long-running dispute concerns Sydney Water’s plan to drastically reduce the 4 million litres of untreated wastewater from the peninsula currently discharged into the ocean each day via three outfalls at the base of the cliffs in Vaucluse, Diamond Bay and Dover Heights. Parsley Bay is a beloved swimming spot in Vaucluse. The reserve behind the beach is to be the site of a new wastewater pumping station. The project was supposed to be finished last year, but is yet to start, and now a renewed campaign is under way, asking Water Minister Rose Jackson to intervene and force engineers back to the drawing board.
The old toilet block will be demolished and replaced with a pumping station on largely the same footprint. They have elicited letters of support from Macquarie University botanist Dr Robert Kooyman and National Parks Association of NSW chief executive Gary Dunnett, engaged public relations veteran and Vaucluse resident Tim Allerton to promote the campaign, and made hats, T-shirts and signs. An online petition has attracted 4300 signatures.
Water Minister Rose Jackson, pictured with Premier Chris Minns, said it was a matter for the board of Sydney Water. The decision was ultimately for Sydney Water’s board, she said, but her office was meeting with community members including the Save Parsley Bay group. Both Sloane and Jackson noted Sydney Water conducted an extensive search for the most suitable site and settled on Parsley Bay.
