West alarmed at 'gold and guns' alliance between Russian Wagner mercenaries and Sudanese rebels

A partnership built on gold, guns, and growing influence is said to be alarming Western officials KieronMonks reports

Wagner’s influence in Sudan is deep-rooted. Meroe Gold, a suspected Wagner front company sanctioned by the US and EU, was formed in 2017 under former president Omar al-Bashir.

Mr Bashir’s regime was overthrown by a coup in 2019. But Wagner and Russia’s influence only grew in Sudan, with both generals Burhan and Daglo looking to Moscow for patronage. Analysts say that relations have become increasingly close between the mercenary group and General Daglo, also known as Hemedti.Wagner Telegram accounts have posted videos of training sessions with RSF forces. The two militiasGeneral Hemedti’s men have provided security services at a Wagner-controlled gold mine in eastern Sudan.
