West Bromwich Albion are waiting to learn if their loan deal for Southampton striker Adam Armstrong was completed on time. Leeds United, who were also linked with Armstrong, decided against making any signings.
Leeds United's Championship rivals West Bromwich Albion are anxiously awaiting confirmation on whether their loan agreement for Adam Armstrong from Southampton was completed in time before last night's transfer deadline. Both clubs reportedly finalized the deal in the final moments of the winter window but didn't receive official confirmation that it was processed within the allowed timeframe. They are expected to learn their fate on Tuesday morning.
Leeds had been linked with Armstrong earlier on Monday, with it becoming apparent that the Saints striker was available for transfer. However, as reported by Leeds Live, the club ultimately decided against pursuing a deal. Adam Armstrong boasts an impressive record in the Championship, having netted 52 goals in his last 89 games in the second tier, including the play-offs. Notably, his goal in last year's play-off final proved decisive in Southampton's victory over Leeds, denying them a return to the Premier League. The 27-year-old has featured in 20 Premier League games for struggling Southampton this season but has managed only two goals. West Brom, now managed by Tony Mowbray, are currently sixth in the Championship, occupying a play-off position only on goal difference. If the deal is approved, Armstrong would become West Brom's fourth signing of the window. Meanwhile, Leeds opted against adding any new players to their squad. Daniel Farke had consistently maintained that he would only bring in talent that would enhance the team and wouldn't sign players merely to increase numbers. This absence of new arrivals marks the third time in the past five seasons that Leeds have not recruited during the winter transfer window. Five players did depart Elland Road, though. Sonny Perkins and youth player Jeremiah Mullen secured permanent transfers to Leyton Orient and Dunferlime, respectively. Joe Gelhardt joined Hull City on a short-term loan, while Charlie Crew moved to Doncaster Rovers and Luca Thomas joined Halifax Town on temporary spells.
