West Dunbartonshire Council is being urged to write to the UK Government and challenge their decision not to compensate WASPI women impacted by the change in state pension age. Labour announced this week that it would not be compensating millions of women born in the 1950s, who claim they were not given sufficient warning of the state pension age being lifted from 60 to 65.
West Dunbartonshire Council is being urged to write to the UK Government and challenge their decision not to compensate WASPI women impacted by the change in state pension age .
The government said an ombudsman found 90% of affected women knew about the changes so there was no reason to compensate them at an estimated £10.5bn. Councillor McColl’s addendum added: “The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman made clear recommendations to the UK Government following its findings that there had been several historic breaches of a civil service code of conduct leading to women born in the 1950s not receiving appropriate notice of changes to state pension age.
The ombudsman report was printed in March this year and councillor McColl believes this means all political parties were aware of the recommendations before the general election was held in July. But Labour councillor David McBride argued that the Government had not failed its citizens as it had made no commitment to compensate Waspi women and that since the election the UK government has uncovered a £22bn deficit left by the Tory government.
