The German sporting director, who joined West Ham from Bayern Leverkusen in the summer of 2023, played a key role in shaping the club's player recruitment strategy. West Ham confirmed Steidten's departure, stating that he had been 'instrumental in our recruitment efforts' and that it was 'time for him to pursue new opportunities'.
Steidten's relationship with former manager David Moyes had become strained towards the end of last season, leading to him being asked to stay away from the training ground. The tension continued under Julen Lopetegui, eventually culminating in Steidten's exit.Although unconfirmed, pictures circulating on social media depicted Steidten meeting Graham Potter, the new manager appointed by West Ham after Lopetegui's departure. The arrival of Macaulay as head of recruitment under Potter seemingly rendered Steidten's position untenable.Chairman David Sullivan had previously supported Steidten's approach during his conflict with Moyes, ultimately withdrawing a contract offer from the departing manager.
