West is short-changing the global south over climate mitigation says Ghana president by Eonapa
, has voiced his criticism of Western nations for the lack of financial assistance to address issues impacting the global south by the climate crisis and is demanding an increase in funding to address climate change.
“The adaptation summit had the mission of mobilising $25bn by 2025… ridiculously, while the G20 countries are responsible for 80 per cent of emissions, Africa left Rotterdam with pledges of up to $55m,” the president of Ghana stated. also pledged an additional $12.5bn to support the climate crisis efforts.
The meeting in Rotterdam – which saw attendance from the UN climate chief Patricia Espinosa, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and IMF head Kristalina Georgieva – heard from representatives from African nations, developing states, small islands and other climate-vulnerable countries. “It is a lot, of course, but it is derisory,” relayed Akufo-Addo, highlighting that G20 countries “are responsible for 80 per cent of [gas] emissions”.
