Local charities in West Lothian are voicing concerns about the potential impact of rising National Insurance Contributions on their operations. The Voluntary Sector Gateway (VSG) reports that many organizations are already struggling with funding and increased demand for services, and the NI increase could force them to reduce staff hours. The VSG and the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) are urging the Chancellor to provide additional funding to offset the costs and prevent cuts to essential services.

West Lothian’s Voluntary Sector Gateway has added its voice to calls to the Chancellor to fund the increases in National Insurance Contributions.

The VSG was giving its six monthly update on its activities to councillors - the first since the announcement in the Autumn budget. “The Third Sector Interface network and SCVO have raised concerns with MSPs to lobby the Scottish Government to in turn pressurise the UK Treasury to exempt charities from the increases.”

Responding to the decision the SCVO said: “Across the UK the voluntary sector is a significant employer, employing over 1 million people, including 133,000 people in Scotland- 5% of Scotland’s workforce.
