The event aims to help amplify, empower, and strengthen the collective voice of women and women of African origin
The African Scottish Expo 2023 returned to Bathgate recently with the aim of connecting and strengthening diverse community relationships. It’s the second year the expo – which is the brainchild of West Lothian African Women’s Network – has been held in the town.
The network was established in 2021 and aims to help amplify, empower, and strengthen the collective voice of women and women of African origin by advancing equal representation in leadership positions and participation in policy and decision-making communities. The network also seeks to educate, promote citizenship, community engagement, and support African women and their families living in West Lothian and Scotland at large to achieve their potential. Eunice Simpson, from the network, said: “We hope to see a West Lothian where women from all backgrounds and cultures including Black African Women have a voice and are fully represented in leadership and have equal opportunities to participate in all aspects of society. “Particularly, in the next few years, we look forward to witnessing West Lothian producing the first Black African Woman councillor. “The event was a celebration of unity, diversity and inclusion and brought to light many different cultures through food, music, dance, and clothing which carried significant meaning of our diversity and coexistence. It was all joy and merrymaking, building friendships and networking. “This year’s expo was bigger, better and hugely successful. Our gratitude goes to the West Lothian Council, our councillors, MSPs, our community fund partners, local businesses and partners for their support to making this year’s event an unforgettable experience.”
