Robert De Bold, the SNP party group depute leader criticised Councillor Andrew McGuire's remark
The SNP opposition on West Lothian Council branded a Labour councillor's remark about middle class rail users a "crass insult to thousands."
Councillor De Bold told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "The Labour councillor's criticism that the Scottish Government 'instead chooses to subsidise middle class rail users so that they don't need to pay peak fares' is a crass insult to the thousands of ordinary working people who take the train to work.
At Tuesday's Executive Councillor McGuire pointed to the Scottish Government's recent decision to end peak rail fares for a six month trial comparing it with the lack of investment in the commercial bus network since it was deregulated in the 1980s Councillor De Bold told the LDRS later: "West Lothian Labour must clarify whether they support Cllr McGuire's opposition to the scrapping of peak fares for rail users. They need to come clean and clarify which of those comments they support."
"Buses allow communities to be better connected and provide vital lifelines for people who don't drive or live near train stations to be able to access medical appointments, visit family and attend to everyday chores."
