West Side Arts & Music’s roots go back over a decade.
The Penniless Loafers will play the New Park Tavern in Jersey City for JC Fridays on Friday, June 7, 2024, and then appear at Lincoln Park on Wednesday, July 3, as part of the West Side Arts & Music "Lincoln Park Life: Music at the Fountain" series. Jersey City’s West Side neighborhood is an oddly shaped collection of mostly residential streets bordered by the Hackensack River and JFK Boulevard, rarely mentioned in conversations about the city’s arts and culture.
The women approached the county looking for permission to use Lincoln Park, and shortly thereafter, Prinz-Arey said, “on a very small budget and with some very good local artists, we did four nights of music at Lincoln Park. And from that point, we changed the name to West Side Arts & Music because we felt it more appropriately described what we were doing.”
“So we thought, let’s go back to our roots, to how this all started, and we had a conversation with Jersey City Birds,” Prinz-Arey said. “They wanted to do a JC Friday so we said, great, we’ll partner together, you guys can handle the art component and there will be artwork by all local birders. And we had been talking to the Penniless Loafers, so we thought, everyone loves them at New Park Tavern, let’s put them on the bill and we’ll also bring them back for a show at Lincoln Park.
Besides the June 7 event at New Park Tavern, the Penniless Loafers will perform at the Lincoln Park fountain on July 3.
