The official closure date is yet to be confirmed
Wetherspoon has revealed the closure of another pub in Nottinghamshire. The Sir John Ardene, in Church Street, Newark, will be shutting its doors.
It follows last year's announcement that the chain was selling The Widow Frost, in Leeming Street, Mansfield. It was put on the market in September 2022, one of 32 pubs being sold off across the country, after the company suffered £30m losses due to the pandemic and lockdown restrictions. Some of the pubs have since been bought.
Staff at the Sir John Ardene were given the news on Wednesday, March 22. Named after the first English surgeon who lived in Newark, it is the only Wetherspoon pub in the town and rates highly in reviews. One visitor said: "Does what Wetherspoons does. Comfortable and clean, ample room and a wide choice of beer at a reasonable price." Two weeks ago one woman reported that the pub was "very busy.
A Wetherspoon spokesman said: "Wetherspoon can confirm that it is to close its pub in Newark. There is no date for the closure as yet and the pub will continue to trade as normal until a closure date is agreed. "There will be no redundancies as all staff will be offered jobs at other Wetherspoon pubs in the region once the pub closes. This is a commercial decision by the company."
