Tuesday's announcement comes at a hugely significant time, one day after reports that Republicans were considering a revolt against Speaker Kevin McCarthy
Democrats said the probes so far have been an “overwhelming failure”, adding: “The voluminous evidence they have gathered, including thousands of pages of bank records and suspicious activity reports and hours of testimony from witnesses, overwhelmingly demonstrates no wrongdoing by President Biden and further debunks Republicans’ conspiracy theories.”
Mr Biden, 80, has insisted he still plans to run for re-election next year, despite some jitters over his advancing age, and lacklustre polling numbers that place him neck-and-neck with Donald Trump in several key states.
The latest flashpoint has been negotiations with the Senate and the Biden administration on must-pass spending Bills, which could provoke a Government shutdown at the end of this month. In a break from past convention, Mr McCarthy did not call a House vote on whether the impeachment inquiry should proceed.
