The NSPCC has advice about keeping children safe at school available online

As the summer holidays approach, many parents may be looking towards their child's next academic year. The move up in year group can bring changes for families, especially as children progress onto a new school.

These changes may leave some parents wondering whether or not they should allow their child to travel to school alone. The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children has lots of advice available on its website for parents and how they can keep their child safe at school.

The NSPCC states: "There’s no legal age that your child can travel home from school alone – this is up to you and your best judgement, or your school’s rules and policies.

"However, you should never leave a child alone who isn’t ready or is unable to care for themselves – learn more about leaving children home alone. "Every child is different – but some schools advise children under eight shouldn't walk home without an adult or older sibling. "- Children should know their address and parent's phone number by heart, in case of an emergency or trying to navigate somewhere new.

- Children should leave the house with a fully charged mobile phone, if they have one, and ensure they have contacts saved. - Parents should teach their child about road safety, such as looking both ways before crossing a street and never using their phone in the road. - Remind children not to accept lifts from someone they don't know or allow a stranger into the house. They also should not share personal information.

- Make sure they know to call a trusted adult if they feel unsafe or in danger. ENJOYED THIS STORY?
