“That’s the main reason why I understand it’s presented to us,” DeBoer said. “It was sometime in the spring, I can’t remember what meeting it was, but it’s been discussed. And I get it. I get why it could be necessary.” SEC commissioner Greg Sankey discussed the issue in May at the conference’s spring meetings in Florida. He said he didn’t expect a final resolution during the meetings, but impacted sports could include men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and volleyball as well as football.
“We have to be thoughtful of how information is managed,” Sankey said. “It’s also a reality that the lives of young people in colleges versus the lives of professional athletes are very different. A lot more exposure to people.” Alabama came face-to-face with the modern gambling realities, in 2023, when baseball coach Brad Bohannon was fired. Bohannon allegedly provided injury information to a bettor before scratching his starting pitcher.“I talk to our guys all the time about, obviously the gambling from their end and how that’s not allowed and you can’t get involved in that,” DeBoer said. “But also any information getting out of our program and how that impacts the outside world, outside of our bubble.
