A new study has warned 'doodles' may be harder work than you might expect. The research published by the Royal Veterinary College has found these breeds 'do not always behave as expected'.

Poodle crossbreeds like labradoodles and cockapoos have become increasingly popular in recent years, and it's not hard to see why. The intelligence and lovely fluffy coat of a poodle matched with the playfulness and size of a breed like a cocker spaniel is hard to resist for many dog lovers.

But now a new study has revealed 'doodles' may be harder work than you might expect. The research published by the Royal Veterinary College has found these breeds "do not always behave as expected". It warned these 'designer-crossbreeds' could be particularly susceptible to anxiety, difficulties with training, and aggression towards both people and other dogs. Cockapoos - a cross between a cocker spaniel and a poodle - are particularly prone to display negative aggression towards other dogs, it said. The owner of a cockapoo who has more than 263,000 followers on TikTok has provided a look into what life with the popular breed is really like. The video opens with a shot of the dog, named Treacle, looking perfectly innocent on the sofa, with the caption: "People want a cockapoo until they realise..." It then shows the pooch lying on her back with her legs spread, looking directly at the camera in a very demanding manner, with the caption: "They demand attention around the clock." The video then shows Treacle giving some serious side-eye to the camera, with the words: "The sass is off the scale." Next we see Treacle lying on the floor, before barking for no apparent reason. The caption reads: "Tantrums are a regular occurrence." The next shot sees the cockapoo running around a snowy back garden at top speed, with the words: "Energy levels are always set to maximum." We then see Treacle fast asleep on the sofa with her head resting on her owner, with the caption: "They're made of Velcro." Next, we see Treacle apparently having a whale of time out of a walk, trotting away quite happily next to her owner and looking back at them with a big smile, with the caption: "They're either overflowing with joy..." But the next shot says "...or utterly offended", along with a shot of the dog on the sofa looking thoroughly unimpressed. Next we see Treacle in the bath, soaking wet and soapy, with the words: "Grooming them is a full-time commitment." Following this, we see a shot from the owner's point of view of them watching TV in the front room, before panning over to Treacle staring at them with a fixed gaze, with the caption: "They'll stare at you when they're ready for bed." The final shot shows Treacle lying flat on the floor with her tail wagging, apparently ready to leap into action at a moment's notice. The final caption says: "They're basically a human in a furry suit." The research also looked at labradoodles - a cross between a poodle and a labrador - and cavapoos - which mix poodles and cavalier King Charles spaniels. Writing in journal PLOS One, the authors of the study said: "Cockapoos exhibited significantly more undesirable behaviours than the labradoodle and cavapoo designer-crossbreeds. "The results of this study highlight the importance of owners thoroughly exploring the characteristics of any breed or crossbreed during pre-purchase research to avoid mis-informed breed selection. In addition, prospective owners should meet the parents of any prospective puppy and appraise their behaviour before making any final acquisition decision. "Veterinary professionals can use the findings of this study to support both prospective and current poodle-cross designer-crossbreed owners by increasing awareness of undesirable behaviours in these specific designer-crossbreeds."
