Australians across the country are gearing up to try their luck in tonight's mammoth $100 million Powerball jackpot.
The Lott estimates the odds of someone winning a division one in Powerball are more than 134 million to one. University of Queensland mathematician Professor Peter Adams calculated that Australians were 650 times more likely to be hit by lightning than knock out the winning numbers in the jackpot. That means the odds of getting struck by lightning would seem like a near-certainty at one in 12,000, compared to taking home the multi-million dollar windfall. In Australia, the odds of being attacked by a shark are eight million to one, meaning you have 16.7 times the chances of being eaten than striking gold in the lottery. So far, 11 Powerball division one winning entries have pocketed more than $492 million.
Five of these wins were in New South Wales, four were in Queensland, and one each in South Australia and Victoria.: Stay across all the latest in breaking news, celebrity and sport via our WhatsApp channel. No comments, no algorithm and nobody can see your private details.
