Nothing could beat the childhood excitement of a trip to 'Woolies' pick 'n' mix
Of all the retailers that have now been consigned to history, few have worked their way into people's affections more than 'Woolies'.
The collapse of Woolworths in 2008 was not only the end of a shopping era but also left a hole in the heart of the High Street in towns across the country. After first taking a look back at Woolies stores in 2016, below we've added more to our list of the most popular Woolies stores in Greater Manchester and what replaced them.
Cheetham Hill - Bury Old Road The picture above shows the Woolworths store at 56 Bury Old Road in September 2008, and at the time the Tesco store behind it was under construction. By June the following year, the Tesco was built and Woolworths signs were still up in the abandoned store next to the Eye Sight opticians.
Urmston - Station Road Woolworths had a branch at 2, Station Road, Urmston, next to Thomas Carter Opticians and near the former Ethel Austin store. But the Woolies shop was already abandoned and had been advertised to let when it was pictured here in May 2009.Discount retailer Quality Save took over the site as a temporary base before it moved to larger premises in Urmston. The store was later taken on by Appliance World.
Salford - Fitzgerald Way Woolworths opened on Fitzgerald Way in the brand new Salford Shopping Centre in 1972. The store lasted right through until the company's collapse in 2008.Shaw - Market Street The store on Market Street in Shaw, Oldham, was also pictured in August 2008 offering Back to School wear starting at £1.
