Morandi himself became one of the most respected engineers in the nation – going on to use the same technique elsewhere, including at Rome’s airport and a bridge over Libya’sthat was the highest single-span bridge in the world – and helped Italy earn the reputation as the nation that could bend concrete. He died in 1989.
