Experts have warned against drinking large quantities of the fizzy drink
As Diet Coke marked its 40th anniversary last year, fans of the refreshing beverage have been lauding it. Despite being a regular feature in fridges nationwide, you might be taken aback by the worrying effects it can have on our bodies.
Even more alarmingly, one study, published in the journal Current Atherosclerosis Reports, suggests that such drinks could be contributing to the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The effects of drinking a can of Diet Coke can reportedly be observed in just one hour, with impacts noted at ten, 20, 40, and 60 minutes after finishing the last sip.
Naik said: "The phosphoric acid attacks the enamel in your teeth, while the artificial sweeteners like aspartame hit your system. Aspartame may trigger taste receptors and trick your body into thinking it has just processed sugar."He explains that after 20 minutes, the drinker's body shifts into "fat storage mode". He referred to research from The Nurses' Health Study linking such drinks with a higher incidence of high blood pressure and type two diabetes.
"The potentially deadly combination of caffeine and aspartame creates a short addictive high similar to the way cocaine works. Excitotoxins are released which may exhaust your brain by overstimulating its neuroreceptors, especially if consumed on a regular basis," he said.Finally, Naik mentions that at the 60-minute mark, individuals are likely to feel hungrier and thirstier than before, increasing the temptation to consume sugary junk food.
