Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has seen one of his World Cup-winning Argentina team-mates hit with a two-tear ban for doping
Argentina's Alejandro 'Papu' Gomez is to be banned from football after being found guilty of doping, and also faces the prospect of losing his World Cup and Europa League titles won last season.
At 35-years-old there have been claims he will immediately retire if the sentence is upheld or at least not reduced significantly, but the damage this controversy deals would not only be to end Gomez's career, it may yet strike some of his biggest achievements from the record. Although not one of Argentina's penalty takers in the showpiece match, he was discovered to be in breach of the World Anti-Doping Agency's list of banned substances days before appearances against Saudi Arabia and Australia.
Alexis Mac Allister was also part of that squad whilst still a Brighton player. That achievement shortly before his 24th birthday, paired with Europa League qualification with his former club, paved the way to a £35m summer transfer to Anfield.
