Creating a safe space and strong working environment is part of being a manager
Women’s football, and women’s sport in general, has long been celebrated for its openness around sexuality. Out gay players are commonplace, as are relationships between those players, both within and across teams. But the propriety of this was questioned this week by one of the leading voices within the women’s game.
“I think player-coach relationships, they are inappropriate. Player to player relationships are inappropriate.” Over the past couple of years, women’s football has had a reckoning around the power structures which have been exploited within the game.in the US National Women’s Soccer League revealed numerous players who had non-consensual relationships within players. In England, Mark Sampson was eventually sacked as England manager after it came to light he had been in a relationship with a player at Bristol Academy whilst Jonathan Morgan was sacked as head coach of Sheffield United for the same reason.
