Fortescue Metals Group’s fire brigade is out in force, armed with buckets of water to pour over questions from still-shocked fund managers and analysts on Australia’s east coast.

He said “the events of the last week have not been ideal, but the talk of instability within the organisation couldn’t be further from the truth,” according to top mining analyst Glyn Lawcock’s telling of events. While the analysts were caught off-guard by last week’s management changes – you could hear that in their questions on the earnings call – there’s little point arguing with Barnaba or even Fortescue founder Forrest about what happened. It’s done.

One of Fortescue’s arguments is that the energy projects will have much longer lives, and justify a lower IRR into perpetuity. However, that argument has yet to catch on as far as analysts are concerned.
