It varies from place to place – but Humans MCR is the foodbank with a difference
The use of emergency food parcels is something that is sadly becoming more and more common, as rises in the cost of living show no sign of abating.
“A lot of parents keep their circumstances hidden from their children, and I completely understand that. Poverty and insecurity can be a real burden on children too – young minds are especially sensitive.” All their food is delivered in unmarked vans so no one knows the people they help are getting support from a foodbank. And they give people in need a choice over what they eat, accommodating a range of diets including vegan, vegetarian, halal and gluten-free.
A former food bank user himself, Lewey would often find rotten veg and broken items in his parcels – which also were missing the food he had requested. Operating out of a small premises on Rochdale Road in Blackley, they are a small team of two packers and two delivery drivers. This week is a busy one – Lewey estimates they will be delivering to over 400 people this week alone.
The list is detailed down to what cooking equipment the person has in their home, as this determines what food they need; whether they like tea or coffee; whether they need cat or dog food for any pets. But once you've done the essential food items and any miscellaneous bits they asked for then you can get creative with the extras you throw in.
The foodbank also receives ad-hoc donations from the public. While I was there, a kind woman brought in a bag of cans and pantry ingredients, including a bag of crumble mix.
