From Farage fans to socialist scousers, I travelled across Merseyside talking to hundreds of people in the run up to the general election

From Farage fans to socialist Scousers, I met hundreds of different people as I travelled across Merseyside in the run up to tomorrow's general election .

Some of my most intriguing conversations came on my trips to Birkenhead. In addition to discovering the wonderful Birkenhead Park, my time in the Wirral town made me very aware of the downward trajectory Birkenhead has sadly been on. In addition to losing out on retail opportunities, a town so close to a large city is undoubtedly going to suffer from an element of brain drain with people moving over the water for jobs.

Despite polling at around 16% nationally, it was still a surprise to come across some many Farage fans around the Merseyside region. This type of comment was not unique to St Helens. I came across people in all parts of Merseyside who were championing Reform UK. I spoke with Richard Leighton who has dedicated much of his life to helping those living on the streets.

It is easy to get caught up in national and international issues during an election campaign. My time in the town of Prescot reminded me of the importance of politicians addressing local issues that impact peoples’ lives every day.
