In this week’s advice column for British Vogue, Ask Eva’s EvaWiseman writes to a reader who’s scared of life returning to normal post-lockdown.
While it’s true that the pandemic kicked many of us quite rudely into a dusty pit of cereal and, it is also true that some people, having sat in that pit weeping for a weekend, then stood up, swept the floor, set up a jazzy little yoga area and unexpectedly found themselves.
Covid forced a lot of people to look closely for the first time at who they’ve become. For most of us, it’ll take a while to pick through the detritus of our own egos, to stack and file the realisations we’ve been forced into by whole weeks spent without another person’s voice, whole years without rush hour, whole months without a meal deal.
You mention allowing friendships to fall away in the same casual breath as deciding to drink less vodka. You describe it as a sort of social spring cleaning, as simple as charity shopping your vests, but you seem to have skipped the part where you hold each friend in your hands and ask, “Does she bring me joy?” The drinks stopped, the texts stopped, and now your life is smooth and solo, without anybody else to spoil the line.
Go back to work with new boundaries and rosier cheeks, and the sort of self-knowledge usually only granted by a year backpacking around Asia with an infected toe. You don’t have to give up everything from the recent past in order to enjoy the peace of the vaccinated present.
