Manchester City's struggles have led to speculation about transfer decisions that could have impacted their performance. This article examines one such instance: the potential signing of Alexis Sanchez.
Struggling Manchester City are in desperate need of solutions after a run of one win in 12 games that has led to doubts over Pep Guardiola's future. A fix for City has rarely been more than one transfer window away in years gone by, but things aren't necessarily as straightforward today given the clubs' star-studded cast and the calibre of coach already in charge. And City know all too well signing the ideal addition can be easier said than done at times.
Even Guardiola has been rejected in the past, although City have usually had a top-tier back-up in mind too. But with City sat seventh in the Premier League, out of the Carabao Cup and struggling in the Champions League, we have taken a look at whether things might have turned out different had certain stars been signed. Rumours began to circulate about a possible reunion with Guardiola in Manchester towards the end of Alexis Sanchez's Arsenal career. The pair had worked together for a single season at Barcelona (Guardiola's last at the club) and were first linked with a reunion in the summer of 2017, then again in January 2018. Guardiola confirmed at the time City had stepped back from signing Sanchez due to concerns about squad harmony. Sergio Aguero was City's top earner and Kevin De Bruyne was in line for a pay rise, meaning Sanchez's potential wages of around £250,000 a week could have disrupted the balance. 'I respect that decision and I move forward and look for another solution because the stability of the club is the most important thing,' Guardiola said at the time. 'Normally we try to be stable with the wages of the players because I think it is good for the team and stability of the club.' Sanchez did end up in Manchester in January 2018 but with United, in a swap deal involving Henrikh Mkhitarya
