Sanderson has maintained that he'd like the Cosmere novels to be understandable individually to avoid excluding readers who aren't caught up on his vast fictional universe. The unprecedented release of four books in one year resulted from Sanderson's extra free time during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Fans who backed the Kickstarter campaign had the four novels shipped to them months before their public release, which occurred months later for each book. All four Secret Project books are now available to the public.
