Hundreds of cases of the potentially deadly illness Strep A have been identified across Australia, prompting authorities to issue warnings for the disease. 9News
More than 500 official cases of invasive streptococcal disease have been identified so far this year, compared to about 1200 cases for all of 2022.died after contracting the disease last year, while in the United Kingdom more than 20 were killed by the infection.
Infectious disease doctor Jeremy Carr said Monash Children's Hospital has treated 25 cases in the past six months. "Invasive Group A Streptococcus was made nationally notifiable in 2021. However, some jurisdictions were unable to begin providing iGAS notification data to the NNDSS until September of this year," a Department of Health spokesperson told 9News.com.au.
When it can get deadly is in cases where it develops a more severe invasion: invasive group A streptococcal disease , which occurs when the bacteria invade the body, overcoming its natural defences to enter areas such as the blood.
