He is clearly what politicians call a good operator to have survived so long
When the chronicle of this Conservative Government is written at last, Michael Gove will be an important, if enigmatic, character in it.
He told his frenemies George Osborne and Ed Balls that he had shown “moral cowardice” in not being clear about the role he would play in the referendum campaign: Cameron “certainly felt betrayed.” He also confessed that he had gone further than he intended. “I didn’t want to take part in the debates, the TV shows that I ultimately took part in, or play a prominent role,” he claims.
In 2019 Gove stood against Johnson for the leadership. Johnson rewarded him with another place in the cabinet. The rivalry between the two men has already been the subject of several books. They met at university where the dashing Johnson recruited Gove, the “pushiest fresher of the year” as “his stooge” to get him elected president of the Oxford Union debating club.
Gove’s colourful and haphazard ministerial service has continued under Sunak. He talked a good game about “levelling up” but, if the opinion polls are right, voters in the target areas think it has been a slogan rather than a benefit. TheFor all his lack of achievement and double-dealing Gove is popular with those who know him. He blends wit with courtesy and readiness to apologise. His dithering persona can be as winning as his exuberance and willingness to share.
