The Drop Bar Cafe, situated on Barlow Moor Road in Chorlton, is celebrating a milestone this weekend
When Jimmy Gill decided to open his first restaurant with friend Ez Saunders almost ten years ago, he didn’t quite know what he was doing.
“You would be having dumplings, rice and peas, macaroni cheese and all these sides on one plate and I fell in love with the cuisine. When I was 18 and went to Barbados with my girlfriend at the time whose family was from there and spent a lot of time trying the food, I knew that was the sort of thing I wanted to do and didn’t feel like there were loads of Caribbean restaurants in Manchester when we started out.
“If you list the things that businesses have been up against on this street in recent years, it’s been very tough, he says. “There’s been a pandemic, inflation rising, price increases - and that’s just for starters. “My mum passed around that time and she really was a pivotal figure in my life and setting up this business - she would call me out and tell me if I had lost that focus. Fortunately, the people here stuck around to help me through it. A lot of people would pack it in at that point, but I’m glad I rode it out.”
"We're always evolving, so we'll do a bit of repainting, and we re-did the sign and outside space recently, and people can even grab some of the new herbs we've planted on their way out. They're behind small plates like the Argentinian prawns grilled with lemon, the jerk wings, mac 'n' cheese and small curried chickpea, as well as the variety of meat and plant-based dishes. As well as staples, there's plates like peppered steak with spinners and jerk halloumi, plus The Drop's range of Lunch Boxes from £6.
