To all appearances Charles I might seem to be the more appropriate role model for the new King. With his high sense of duty, his religious piety allied to strong political convictions, his respect for family values, and his earnest engagement with the day-to-day business of government, he was in many respects the epitome of what monarchs throughout the ages have aspired to be. Yet as a politician he was fatally flawed.

This allied to a spectacular insensitivity, a complete lack of the antennae which could judge the size of a political threat before it developed, and an addiction to inept intrigue as a way of dealing with his enemies.Charles I remained in a strong bargaining position
