Verdict from Beth Lindop after Liverpool beat Aston Villa 1-0 Women's Super League at Prenton Park

But, where Liverpool teams of the past might have lost their footing in the face of Villa's burgeoning attacking endeavour, Beard's side looked more resolved than ever to end the day as victors. And, after 20 minutes, the Reds' deservedly made the breakthrough. Koivisto's goal-line heroics were followed by two smart saves from Laws, who did well to deny both Anna Patten and Alisha Lehmann before the interval. While Villa's rejuvenated attack demanded more defensive discipline from Liverpool as the half wore on, the Reds maintained their attacking threat.
Villa continued to prod and probe but Beard's side stood firm. Every block, every tackle, every stride forward was greeted with whoops and cheers from the Liverpool faithful. But one of the most resounding ovations of the evening was reserved for the introduction of Melissa Lawley, brought on from the bench after almost six months out with a hip injury.
