Sandwiches are being stolen, people are being intimidated - but what's behind this phenomenon
A few weeks ago, a number of ECHO reporters were venturing out for a hard-earned lunch break after a morning of newsgathering. Making our way across Exchange Flags, behind Liverpool Town Hall, we saw a man excitedly exiting a nearby sandwich shop, looking chuffed to bits with his lunch purchase.
We are near the coast, of course, so this isn't entirely unexpected. But the growth in the number, size and confidence of the seabirds in our midst tells another story of a big issue affecting the city. The changing shape and habits of these birds and the reasons behind this are not lost on city leaders. Cllr Tom Crone is the leader of Liverpool's Green Party and a keen student of environmental changes.
Cllr Crone added: "The amount of food left around the city centre is clearly a driver of this behaviour. It would be great if people could be a little more mindful about how they are disposing of their litter." He said: "It is great to see so many local litter picking groups popping up around the city. We have new groups in the shape of the St Michaels and Lark Lane Wombles who are doing a great job to keep their areas clean."
She said: "Hats off to the seagulls to be honest. Why try and eat from an overfished sea when you can come into the city for chips and a kebab? They have adapted. I work in the Cunard Building and we have to be very careful when eating a sandwich out in the open around there because they do swoop in.
