Ms Truss was today confirmed as the UK's new Prime Minister
Liz Truss has been confirmed as the UK’s new Prime Minister today following a summer long election process to be crowned the new leader of the Conservative Party.
Fracking During hustings, the former Foreign Secretary has said she backs the net zero push, but would pause green levies on domestic energy bills, which could damage the target. She has said there is a strong case for lifting the ban on fracking and wants to move away from the EU’s habitat directive in favour of a stronger British biodiversity target.
Energy bills After previously ruling out any further “handouts”, Ms Truss is strongly considering urgent action to help people with fuel bills according to those close to her. The most likely plan at this stage appears to be a freeze on energy bills, which would mean people’s bills do not suffer a major rise when the price cap is lifted in October.
Ms Truss’ plans have focused on cuts to national insurance despite warning this will disproportionately help higher earners and offer little to no benefit to the least well off in society. Asked about this yesterday, she said “growing the economy benefits everybody” and it is “wrong” to look at everything through the “lens of redistribution”.
