Former Manchester City assistant manager Enzo Maresca looks set to replace Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge.
If Enzo Maresca takes the vacant manager's job at Chelsea, he will already know a couple of familiar faces in the Stamford Bridge dressing room.
It wasn't only Palmer and Lavia who can credit Maresca with an important role in their development. Tommy Doyle, James McAtee, Morgan Rogers, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Liam Delap and Oscar Bobb all worked under the Italian at the CFA and when City leaned on their local youngsters to boost training numbers during the Covid-19 pandemic, Maresca was a useful bridge to the first team when joining the coaching staff as well.
Maresca took a group of talented, often maverick players, arguably overloaded in attack, and made them a formidable attacking unit. He got the most out of each forward – Palmer in particular – and their subsequent careers show how important that year was in giving them the belief in their abilities. As some of those players headed out on loan, Palmer stayed at City and graduated to the first team. By the time Maresca had left for Italy and returned as Guardiola's assistant, Palmer was a full-time senior player. That year was a frustrating one for Palmer who had to rely on cameo appearances, but Maresca's work behind the scenes led to moments of brilliance against Bruges, Swindon and Wycombe.
